Restoring the Home of Self-Reliance in Varanasi :The Emotional Renewal of a Women’s Empowerment Hub

In the heart of Jayapur — the village adopted by our Honourable Prime Minister in Varanasi — a humble yet heartfelt initiative took shape in 2011. Five rooms, each measuring 20 by 21 feet, were built not just as structures of brick and cement, but as spaces of purpose and pride.

Today, those rooms are alive with the rhythm of progress. More than 50 women, and at times as many as 75 or even 100, work tirelessly under the Government’s Khadi Gram Udyog Programme. Within these walls, the quiet clatter of spinning wheels and the soft murmur of laughter weave together stories of strength and self-reliance. What began as an effort to support livelihoods has become a movement of empowerment that breathes life into the community every single day.

The rooms have also served the broader needs of Jayapur. During the wheat procurement season, the Gram Panchayat uses one or two of them for 1–2 months — a testament to how thoughtfully designed infrastructure can serve multiple purposes, fostering both economic activity and community welfare.

Over time, the walls faded, the doors aged, and the roof grew weary under countless monsoons. Yet, the spirit within never dimmed. Recently, these five rooms have been beautifully renovated — freshly whitewashed and painted, with roofs waterproofed, new windows and doors fitted, partial tin-shed replacements, and careful plastering work. Each brushstroke and repair carries a promise to the women who call this place their workplace — a promise of dignity, safety, and continuity.

This transformation goes far beyond physical restoration. It rekindles the light of opportunity for women who are shaping their own futures, stitch by stitch. The once-quiet rooms now hum with purpose — symbols of perseverance, unity, and hope.

In Jayapur, these five rooms aren’t just buildings — they’re beating hearts. They hold the dreams of women who dared to believe that change can begin with something as small as a thread and as strong as their will.
