Where Dreams Take Root: A Silent Revolution in Slums of Koliwada

Avaada Sports and Recreation Centre, Koliwada

In the slums of Koliwada, Mumbai, many young people grow up with limited access to safe recreational spaces, structured activities and positive mentorship. Excessive screen time and negative influences can easily distract their energy and potential. Avaada Foundation recognised this challenge and responded with opportunity, encouragement and care.

Over the past 1.5 years, the Avaada Sports and Recreation Centre (ASARC) has transformed into a vibrant community space where young minds play, learn, compete and discover their strengths. The Centre has enrolled 200 students, while many more young people regularly visit and benefit from its activities.

Avaada Foundation conducts table tennis, chess and carrom sessions to strengthen concentration, strategy and teamwork. Archery training for girls challenges gender stereotypes while building precision, patience and confidence. Yoga and meditation promote emotional well-being and self-control, while art and craft encourage creativity. The Spoken English programme strengthens communication skills, confidence and future employment prospects.

This grassroots youth empowerment initiative has created an impact far beyond the playing field. Young participants now spend more time in constructive activities, follow routines, respect rules and build positive friendships. Parents have also noticed greater discipline, enthusiasm and self-confidence in their children.

ASARC proves that when young people find a safe space, the right guidance and meaningful opportunities, they can transform their energy into purpose. What began as a sports and recreation centre has grown into a platform for confidence, creativity, life skills and aspiration.

Through this community development initiative in Mumbai, Avaada Foundation continues to nurture young potential—turning today’s uncertain steps into tomorrow’s confident journeys.
